There’s a magic that happens when fun, connection, and flow come together in your workday. Let's call it Fun + Work — and that’s exactly what I wanted to explore in Coffee Chat #41. In it, I read from The Power of Fun by Catherine Price and share some of the albums that help me tap into a productive, joyful mindset at work (and get into that “flow state” where time seems to disappear).
What Is Flow and Why It Matters
Flow is a psychological state where you’re fully absorbed in an activity, completely engaged, and performing at your best. In flow:
Time seems to fly by
Distractions fade away
You feel both energized and deeply focused
This state isn’t just about productivity — it’s about enjoyment and meaning. Researchers describe flow as an optimal experience where action and awareness merge, bringing both performance and satisfaction to the task at hand.
Finding Joy and Playfulness at Work: Fun + Work
Work doesn’t have to be all grind and no play. In my video, I talked about some albums I love — from Abbey Road by The Beatles to Tea for the Tillerman by Cat Stevens — that help me smile, lean into creativity, and slip into that flow while I’m working.
These aren’t just songs — they’re tools. They help me:
Set a positive tone for the day
Create space for focused work
Stay energized while tackling tasks
And yes — fun is serious business. Research shows that positive environments where people feel connected and joyful can help people enter flow more often, enhancing performance and well-being.
Play + Connection + Flow = True Fun
Catherine Price defines “true fun” as the intersection of:
Playfulness
Connection
Flow
What I want you to take from this Coffee Chat is not just a playlist — it’s the idea that work can feel good. It’s not a contradiction to enjoy what you do. In fact, that enjoyment can fuel deeper focus, creativity, and even better results.
Whether you’re tackling a big project, working through a creative challenge, or just trying to make your workday more joyful — look for ways to bring play, connection, and flow into your routine.
